The Significance of Teacher Preparation for Texas Education: A CREATE Perspective
Preparing and retaining a strong supply of highly effective teachers is one of Texas’ (and America’s) most critical public workforce issues. The quality and effectiveness of public school teachers profoundly influences the academic, civic and social development of the state’s burgeoning student population, and it can be argued that cultivation of a competent and caring teacher workforce for Texas schools is ultimately the key linchpin in state efforts to assure economic prosperity and high standard of living for all Texans.Universities constitute a vital component of the state’s system of public education, and as such, CREATE believes that higher education institutions have a profound obligation to seriously address teacher supply and capacity issues.
As a consortium of state universities, CREATE is devoted to championing necessary improvements in university-based teacher preparation. Through its research and development initiatives, CREATE seeks to promote information driven, research-based transformation of Colleges of Education. CREATE advocates a continuous quality improvement process for teacher education necessary to move institutions from current practice to refined processes in a manner that will successfully accommodate the state’s needs for more highly qualified teachers. In addition, CREATE seeks to facilitate and strengthen professional bonds and working relationships between Colleges of Education and public education leaders in the state. As such, CREATE plays an important role in formulating and shaping improved teacher preparation practices which can ultimately translate into greater academic success for future generations of Texas students.
